Five Ways to Build Language at the Playground

September 11, 2026 ยท Disha Patel, M.S., CCC-SLP

The playground is one of the richest language classrooms in Brooklyn โ€” no flashcards required.

1. Narrate the action. "You are climbing up, up, up!" Words stick best when they land on what your child is already doing.

2. Pause and wait. Count to five in your head before you fill the silence. That pause is often where a first word appears.

3. Use playful repetition. Say "ready, set, go" before every slide. Predictable phrases invite your child to fill in the blank.

4. Follow their lead. If they are fascinated by a puddle, talk about the puddle. Interest drives attention, and attention drives learning.

5. Celebrate the attempt. Any sound, sign, or gesture toward communication deserves a big warm response.
